GUWAHATI: ASTC Green Bus services in the city came to a halt on Wednesday, March 12, as drivers staged a protest against high daily revenue targets and salary deductions. Around 100 buses remained off the roads, causing inconvenience to commuters.

Talking to GPlus, an Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) driver said, “The daily target set for us is ₹6,800 for routes from GS Road to Khanapara, and in the Beltola area, it’s even higher at ₹7,200. But with fluctuating passenger numbers and rising fuel costs, meeting these targets every day is nearly impossible."
Another driver talking to GPlus further pointed out how these targets directly impact their earnings. “Earlier, we used to earn around ₹15,000 a month, but now, if we fall short of the target, our salaries are cut. We barely manage to take home ₹10,000 to 12,000 now. We work long hours on the road, yet instead of fair pay, we are constantly worried about deductions,” he added.
With drivers raising their voices against what they call "unrealistic targets" and "unfair salary cuts," the city’s public transport system faces an uncertain future.
