GUWAHATI: Residents of Guwahati were surprised by a sudden and significant drop in temperatures, accompanied by heavy rainfall and gusty winds. The minimum temperature plummeted to approximately 22°C.
The temperatures throughout the week in Guwahati are expected to touch a high of 34°C and a low of 21°C.
The abrupt weather change has been attributed to a cyclonic circulation over North Bangladesh and neighboring areas, which, combined with moisture influx from the Bay of Bengal, has led to unsettled conditions across Assam and other northeastern states. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light to moderate rainfall activity over the next five days, affecting regions including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
This phenomenon aligns with the pre-monsoon season's characteristic "Nor'westers" or Kalbaisakhi storms, which are typical in April.
These storms often bring sudden, intense weather changes, including heavy rain, strong winds, and occasional hail. Originating over the Chhotanagpur Plateau, they gain strength as they move southeastward, impacting states like Assam.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued warnings for various districts, anticipating thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
Residents have been advised to stay updated with the latest weather advisories and take necessary precautions during this period.
