Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge to be Completed by March 2023

GUWAHATI: The construction of the six-lane bridge over the River Brahmaputra connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati will be completed by March 2023.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday, June 16, directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to complete the Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge in the stipulated time. As per data provided by the PWD (EAP) department, 37 percent of the work has been completed. 

The total cost of the project is Rs. 2608 crore. Of this, Rs. 1210 crore has been received from the BRICS New Development Bank and Rs. 995.14 crore has so far been utilised. Further, in the budget provision for the financial year 2021-22, Rs. 550 crore has been allocated for the project.

20 percent of the total project cost will be borne by the Assam Government, sources informed.

The Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge will be the first of its kind in the Northeast. The length of the six-lane project will be 8.4 km with an approach road on both sides of the Brahmaputra and the length of the actual bridge over the river will be 1.24 km.  The width of the bridge will be 33 metres. 

The foundation stone of the bridge was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 9, 2019.
