Guwahati: Local Residents Demand Rotary Before Six Mile Flyover, Stage Protest

GUWAHATI: Distressed residents of Downtown and nearby areas have expressed grave concern about the closing of Downtown and Rukminigaon Traffic Points in Guwahati. Local residents of Mathura Nagar, Dwarka Nagar, Chachal and Hengrabari areas on Tuesday, May 17, staged a protest on GS Road and demanded a crossing in front of the Downtown Hospital for the convenience of vehicular and pedestrian movement.

A Memorandum has been written by local residents to the Commissioner of Police of Kamrup Metro in this regard.

“We, the residents of Mathura Nagar, Dwarka Nagar, Chachal and Hengrabari area would like to oppose the rule of District Administration of closing the Downtown Traffic point and recently the Rukminigaon Traffic Point, for which the residents of these areas and since there are two hospitals in the area, the patients too, have to suffer a lot in their daily vehicular and pedestrian movement,” reads the memorandum.

“Earlier, we used to take a U-turn from the Pibco point which has been closed now. Now, we are asked to take a U-turn from under the Six-Mile flyover, making it difficult for us as we have to travel an extra four kilometres from the GNRC Hospital to take a turn. If I have to take someone to the Apollo Hospital, I will have to go ahead up till Six-Mile to take a turn,” a local resident told G Plus.

The resident further demanded the concerned authorities to open the Pibco point and said, “We demand the opening of the Pibco point so that we can make a U-turn. It is becoming extremely difficult for us as there is always a bad traffic jam in the Six-Mile area”.

An elderly resident from the protest said, “It is strenuous when old people like us have to go so far just to cross the road. Also, considering such high fuel prices, we end up spending a lot. It is equally difficult for students in the Downtown area”.

Further, the residents of Mathura Nagar, Dwarka Nagar, Chachal and Hengrabari areas in Guwahati have urged the District Administration to make their movement convenient by fulfilling the following demands at the earliest:
1. Construct a traffic rotary near Pantaloons showroom.
2. Open the divider in front of Downtown Hospital for vehicular traffic till the rotary is complete and keep it always open for Pedestrian crossing.
3. Stop harassing patients, school-going students and common people without prior intimation.
