Guwahati: GMC Carries out Mass Eviction In Fancy Bazar

GUWAHATI: Roadside shopping amid the festive season turned out to be a damp squib as the enforcement branch of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) carried out a mass eviction in the Fancy Bazaar area of Guwahati.

According to an official from the GMC, a total of 300 traders were evicted who were selling clothes, fruits, and other items on the footpath.

Speaking to GPlus, Shyam Yadav, a fruit seller from Fancy Bazar said, "They do this every year, however, this is not the permanent solution."

Yadav further stated that this is the fourth time the GMC has taken down his business and yet the authority has not demarcated any permanent vending zone for them to run their business.

As per sources, the eviction process turned into a state of chaos, primarily because many traders were unprepared or unwilling to vacate the areas in Fancy Bazar.

Consequently, this situation resulted in physical altercations and the use of force to compel their departure.

Further details on the situation are awaited as the traders and sellers have been directed to vacate and put up shop elsewhere.
