GUWAHATI: Construction of a specified footbridge in Paltan Bazar began two years ago to convene public facilitation but of late has come to a halt for unknown reasons. The purpose of the bridge is to alleviate the difficulties faced by commuters when crossing the road as stated by officials.
Before the start of the construction, the government announced that the footbridge would be directed towards KC Sen Road in Paltan Bazar.
However, the bridge will instead connect to the main road.
Munim Paul, a shopkeeper in Paltan Bazar, criticising the construction, stated that it is pointless since the authorities show no concern for maintenance.
Another shopkeeper of Paltan Bazar, Manju Kalita, complains that the construction work remains incomplete and disorganised, obstructing the road. The construction materials have been left on the side of the road, creating significant problems for pedestrians and commuters.
Asim Haloi, a fruit seller in Paltan Bazar, mentions that the workers are active during nighttime but progress is slow.
As a result, there is heavy congestion on Paltan Bazar road every day.
Since the construction began, residents have consistently complained about the poor quality of the road and the added congestion, making it difficult for drivers to navigate.
According to a source in the Public Works Department (PWD), the construction work was halted due to issues with land acquisition.
However, work is gradually resuming, albeit with challenges posed by the ongoing traffic.
The juxtaposition of the uncompleted footbridge in a fast-developing city creates major hassle and issues for the residents, owing to limiting accessibility and usability. The citizens hope for the fast-paced development of the footbridge.
