GUWAHATI: A new species of frog, Leptobrachium aryatium, has been named based on specimens preserved at Arya Vidyapeeth College, with its origin traced back to the Garbhanga-Rani landscape on the outskirts of Guwahati.
Speaking to GPlus, Dr Saibal Sengupta researcher and retired principal-in-charge of Arya Vidyapeeth College, said,
"The samples were collected earlier from the Garbhanga-Rani landscape. It is the last surviving patch of such habitat in the area, and possibly the only remnant plot left."
Talking to GPlus, a senior official from Arya Vidyapeeth College said, " It is named Leptobrachium aryatium, the species belongs to the genus Leptobrachium. The name has been derived from “Arya” referring to Arya Vidyapeeth College and “-tium”, a suffix used to denote honour—together signifying a tribute to the institution."
He further added, "The discovery has been formally published in Zootaxa, a peer-reviewed scientific journal with a global readership (ISSN 1175-5334, online edition). "
