GUWAHATI: On the second day of public hearings, over 645 representations from 13 districts and several representations from political parties were heard by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
ECI has been conducting public hearings on the draft delimitation proposal for Assam, entering its second day of discussions in Guwahati. The Commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel, engaged in meetings with political parties to seek their feedback and suggestions on the proposed delimitation.
During the discussion held today, representatives from various political parties participated and shared their insights on the draft proposal. The National Parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party, Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Bharatiya Janata Party, were among the participants. Additionally, representatives from state parties such as All India United Democratic Front, Asom Gana Parishad, United People’s Party Liberal, and Bodoland People’s Front also presented their feedback before the Commission.
The Commission also welcomed representatives from the United Opposition Forum of Assam, which comprises several parties, including Assam Pradesh Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPM, Raijor Dal, CPI, Jatiya Dal Assam, NCP, RJD, Janata Dal (U), TMC, and CPI(ML), among others. Several Registered Unrecognized Political Parties (RUPPs) also took part in the discussions, making the sessions diverse and inclusive.
Yesterday, the Commission had a productive session, hearing over 270 representations from nine districts. The engagement with various stakeholders will continue tomorrow as the ECI seeks comprehensive input to shape the delimitation proposal for Assam.
