GUWAHATI: Locals of Chandrapur area have called for a 12-hour bandh on September 12 from 5 AM to protest against Guwahati Municipal Corporation's (GMC) decision to shift the Boragaon dumping ground to Chandrapur area.
According to reports, the communication to the area has been interrupted with major business establishments closed down from the stretch of Birkuchi to Govardhan market.
Reportedly, the GMC will be building a Solid Waste Extraction Project in Chandrapur and the authorities have said the project will be ready within 3 years.

Earlier, in an order by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the GMC has decided to shift the dumping ground from the present location to Chandrapur area.
Notably, the Boragaon dumping ground of the GMC is posing a threat to the natural habitation at Deepor Beel just on the outskirts of the city.
The site is protected under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, 1971. The area has been suffering from environmental degradation due to continuous waste dumping since 2004. The continuous garbage dumping by the GMC is causing serious health issues among the local residents, who have demanded that the garbage dumping should be stopped immediately.
