GUWAHATI: The Gauhati University has granted Post Graduate (PG) approval to four departments of Pragjyotish College.

It is for the first time that four departments of an affiliated college have been granted approval for Masters Degree simultaneously. Hence, post graduate courses will now be opened in the departments of geography, geology, zoology and education.

Dr Biswajit Sarma, Director of College Development Council (CDC), GU, formally handed over the approval order on 29th January.

Dr Manoj Kumar Mahanta, principal of Pragjyotish College, speaking to G Plus said, "We are very proud of the approval. It was a long time standing demand of ours. We have written to the Gauhati University stating that even the affiliated colleges should be permitted to have PG courses."

"The city and the state have many intelligent students who pass with good marks, but due to limited number of seats in Masters Degree in the university they fail to opt for higher studies. And our college has developed the necessary infrastructure for the same. And hence we have finally succeeded in obtaining the approval," he said.

"I would like to thank the Vice Chancellor and authorities of the university, the Director of the College Development Council for the approval," he added.

The college will now have seven departments with PG courses including economics, Assamese and tourism management.

Principal Mahanta informed that preparations are made to secure approval for two more departments - botany and history. "We are developing the infrastructure and will apply for approval by next year."
