Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made the announcement following the six-hour long cabinet meeting held on Monday, May 5.

It was noted that the Bureau of Economic Offense had only handled two to three cases in the last five years. With the introduction of GST, tax evasion cases also shifted away from its jurisdiction.

Therefore, the merger will allow the combined police teams to jointly investigate corruption and financial irregularities.

In a related decision, the cabinet also sanctioned ₹300 crore as targeted subsidy and ₹200 crore as normal subsidy to Assam Power Distribution Company Limited, following a ₹1 reduction in electricity tariff for consumers.
