Gauhati High Court Orders Fresh Counselling For NEET PG 2024 Seats

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has directed the Assam government to allocate 288 NEET PG 2024 State quota medical seats, along with an additional 25 per cent increase to implement the 10 per cent Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota. This raises the total seats to 371 for the first round of counselling.

The court ruled that these 371 seats must be distributed in accordance with the State’s reservation policy to ensure proper implementation of the EWS quota. The order was issued in response to two separate writ petitions filed by candidates from both reserved and unreserved categories, demanding a proportional increase in postgraduate (PG) medical seats to accommodate the EWS quota.

In response to the State government’s submission that the last date for joining PG courses is February 28, the court has directed the allocation of 371 seats as per the State’s reservation policy and ordered the restart of the counselling process.

The court also instructed that the first round of counselling be restarted, allowing the most meritorious candidates a fair choice of seats. However, the choices made in the initial round held on 18 November 2024 will remain unchanged. Candidates who were previously allotted seats will be given the option to select from the newly available 83 seats in the revised first round.

Following this, a fresh second round of counselling will be conducted, as the court has set aside all seat allocations made in the second round from December 12, 2024 onwards. The court noted that since the availability of seats for various categories remains uncertain, a new selection process is necessary.
