G Plus launches #FakeMat – An awareness campaign against Fake News

Guwahati: In a bid to increase awareness about the prevailing dangers of fake News on the digital media space and the rate at which it spreads using various applications, G Plus launched the ‘FakeMat’ campaign across the city.

The campaign will be executed using various means such as digital media, social media, outdoor & print media and on-ground activations with an aim to reach over a million people within the city and outside as much as possible.

The ‘Fake Mat’ initiative is aimed to engage with the youth who are largely active users of the internet and social media. Owing to the large amount of ‘content’ surfacing on the internet, unverified news has also found its way among readers which also included the recent misinformation case of the ‘xopadhora’ incident on digital media.

Extending support to the campaign, Finance Minster of Assam, Dr.Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “I request people not to spread fake news in our society as we have seen negative impact of such news in recent days which can turn into a tragic situation. So I request everyone not to spread fake news.

Sunit Jain, MD and Publisher of G Plus said, “It is tragic that two lives were lost and the situation here in Assam became so tense simply because of the spread of misinformation on digital media. Being a publisher and having the trust and confidence of people from the city, it puts us in a position of immense responsibility and we want to do our bit to make people extremely aware about spreading incorrect information on the digital media space.”

The campaign has already seen support by artists such as Zublee Baruah, Utpal Das, Nishita Goswami with other eminent personalities joining the campaign.
