According to a press release, the CBI had registered the case on October 15, 1996, based on a complaint by the Registrar (Judicial) of the Gauhati High Court. Wahed Ali was accused of embezzling ₹81,000 while being deputed to collect money from the treasury and bank.

Sensing possible action against him, he later deposited the amount via treasury challan and informed authorities that he would refund any additional amount drawn.

Further investigation revealed that Ali had also manipulated Travel Allowance (T.A.) bills, tampered with figures, and added bogus names to facilitate fraudulent withdrawals. The total embezzled amount was found to be ₹38,88,050.

Following the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against him and others on September 5, 2000. After years of legal proceedings, the Special Judge, CBI (Additional Court No. 03), Chandmari, Guwahati, delivered the verdict, convicting Wahed Ali.
