GUWAHATI: It's Uruka today and people of Assam are all set for a grand feast with their loved ones tonight to mark the onset of Bhogali Bihu.

The Uzanbazar fish market has been flooded with various kinds of fish since the wee hours. The fish vendors have come from different places in and around Guwahati and have started selling fish from as early as 3 am today.

Fish from various parts of lower and middle Assam, such Nalbari, Sualkuch, Mukalmuwa, Nagaon were brought to the ghat.

Speaking to G Plus, the vendors said that the sale has been little less as compared to previous years but they are hopeful of selling off their stock.

"Guwahatians have shown much interest in fish this year too. People are buying all sorts of fish for the dinner tonight, but Ari is commanding the highest price this year," said a fish vendor

A kg of Chitol fish has been priced at Rs 550-Rs 650 while a kg of Ari fish has been priced at Rs 800-1000 per kg while Bhokua fish has been priced Rs 500-600 per kg depending on its size.

On the other hand, meat vendors have expressed a little disappointment this year. Several vendors who have come from nearby areas have informed that the demand for fish is much higher than chicken, duck or pigeon. "We could not make the profit that we expected. At least in the Uzanbazar area, the fish vendors are making a much better profit," said a meat vendor from Kurua.

Meat prices:

Duck -   Rs 600 plus per piece

Pigeon - Rs 300 plus per pair

Mutton - Rs 650 per kg

Local Chicken - Rs 380 per kg

Guwahatians have expressed a sense of joy that the hue and cry over the Citizenship Amendment Act has failed to dampen the spirit of Bhogali Bihu.
