GUWAHATI: The first phase of commissioning of the South West Guwahati Water Supply project under JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission) was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister (CM) Sarbanada Sonowal on 30th November at Sadilapur, Jalukbari in Guwahati.

Implemented under the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), the South West Guwahati water supply project will cater to four District Metering Areas (DMAs) under the Kamakhya Distribution Zone of the project.
In this first phase water will be supplied from Bhootnath to Maligaon Chariali along the foothills of Nilachal Hill, Kalipur, Kamakhya Colony, Pandu, Boripara, Pandav Nagar, Kamakhya Nagar, Ananda Nagar, Sankar Nagar, Joymoti Nagar, Adabari, etc.
Water from this project will also be supplied to the Ramsa Hill mega reservoir at Kharghuli under JICA-assisted Guwahati Water Supply Project (Central Zone) through a 9-km separate pipeline. From there water will be provided to Uzanbazar, Kharghuli, Ramsa Hill, Amiyo Nagar, Chandmari, Rajgarh, RG Baruah Road Tiniali, Geetanagar, BSF Camp, etc.
The South West Guwahati water supply project has been implemented at a total cost of Rs 407.52 crores. The final house to house connections will be provided by the Guwahati Jal Board.
Guwahati Development Department Minister, Siddhartha Bhattacharya, who was also present on the occasion stated that, when operated to its full capacity, the project will provide 10 crore litres of water to the city daily.
Stating that the water supply project would be able to bridge the demand-supply gap of potable drinking water in a large portion of the city, CM Sonowal said that the completion of the water project was delayed due to the pandemic situation. He further said that the second phase of the project will also be completed soon.
