Fire breaks out in Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express, 2 dead

GUWAHATI: The Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express caught fire near Chaterhat station about 20 km from New Jalpaiguri on March 22.  

Railway officials said the driver of the train pulled the emergency brakes and stopped the train near Chathaat station in Phansidewa block of Darjeeling under Siliguri sub-division, when detected the smoke from the engine.

However, two passengers have been reportedly dead as they jumped out of the moving train.

“Two passengers have died after jumping out of the moving train. There is no report of any other casualty or injury,” IANS quoted a fire official.

According to press intimation by Railway Chief Public Relations Officer, Pranav Jyoti Sharma, Railway Medical team along with accident relief train also left immediately for the site. The unaffected coaches were detached and brought back to Chaterhat station by attaching another engine. 

An inquiry by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Northeast Frontier Railway, Kolkata under Ministry of Civil Aviation, Govt. of India has been ordered into the incident.
