Cheques were handed over to the next of kin (NoK) of the four deceased victims. Families of five others who remain trapped in the flooded mine holes also received ₹6 lakh each as part of the announced compensation, with the remaining ₹4 lakh to be provided later.

Rai expressed his condolences to the bereaved families. “This tragedy is deeply painful. While no compensation can match the value of a lost life, this is a small step to support the families and show our solidarity,” he said.

The minister further informed that dewatering efforts at the mine are ongoing, with approximately one crore litres of water being extracted daily. However, a significant amount of water remains inside the mine holes, delaying recovery efforts.

The programme, held at Umrangso Police Station on Thursday, was also attended by Debolal Gorlosa, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council.
