GUWAHATI: Eminent Assamese poet and Jnanpith award winner Nilamani Phookan Jr passed away today, January 19, 2023, at the age of 90.
Nilamani Phookan Jr was severely ill and was being treated at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
Nilamani Phookan Jr's work was known for its symbolism, inspired by the symbolism in French poetry.
His notable works include Surya Henu Nami Ahe Ei Nodiyedi, Gulapi Jamur Lagna, and Kobita.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid his condolences and tweeted, "I am saddened to hear of the passing away of one of the brightest stars who blessed the society of Assam with his literary creation. He was awarded the Jnanpith Award for his contribution to the development of Assamese poetry, language and literature."
"His death is an irreparable loss to Assam and the Assamese national identity. I wish him eternal peace and extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. The funeral will be held with full state dignity," the tweet read further.
