Eggs in Assam will now have a fixed retail price

In view of the egg prices in the State rapidly heading north, the administration has swung into action fixing the maximum retail rate of eggs at Rs 6.50 per piece.

Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Atul Bora today held ameeting with the wholesale egg traders of the State and the Assam Livestock and Poultry Corporation and directed them to supervise the process.

“Steps are being taken so that the egg prices are not hiked exorbitantly by the traders. However, Andhra Pradesh being the biggest supplier of eggs, the prices have gone up with a rate hike at the source of production – Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh. However, all steps are being taken to eliminate the role of middlemen in the process,” the Corporation chairman Manoj Saikia said.

Currently, the cost of eggs reaching Assam, including the packaging and transportation cost, is Rs 6.15 with the source rate being Rs 5.10 per piece.

Saikia further added that the Corporation would soon announce measures to stabilise the rate of eggs in State.
