The pilot project of turning the MG Road into a Walking Zone was launched for the first time on 22nd Oct, Sunday. State Tourism Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has initiated the move with the idea of bringing the citizens of Guwahati closer to the beauty of the Brahmaputra River front.
However, the move that was executed within a very short notice, led to chaos in various parts of the city, specially the AT Road, towards which all the vehicles were diverted. The District Administration now is focusing on improving the experience of the Walking Zone and making it better for the public.
DC, Kamrup (M) M. Angamuthu said that the administration has been assessing field level inputs and feedback received from the government agencies, the public and other stake holders to improve the walking experience for the common people.
The District Administration is overwhelmed to see thousands of people coming out on the streets of MG Road, and plans to work out on better roads furnishing and logistical support in the future. The administration is also planning to improve on the parking facilities.
