Cyber crime on rise, retired defence personnel becomes victim

GUWAHATI: Cyber crime is on the rise in the city and this time the criminals picked up a retired defence personnel.

Cyber criminals withdrew Rs. 2.35 lakhs from his account. The said official is a resident of Manipuri Basti and has been a victim of ATM card cloning. The victim later lodged a complaint at the Paltan Bazar Police Station on Tuesday and the police has started the investigation.

In the past few months many incidents have been reported in Guwahati related to cyber crime in which criminals have been able to clean the bank accounts of common people and VIPs alike (AGP MLA, Utpal Dutta lost over Rs. 14 lakh from the Dispur SBI branch account).

Cyber criminals have devised various ways to cheat people of their money. It seems a card cloning gang is active right under the nose of the police department. The elderly and not so tech savvy seem to be prime targets of these gangs.
