GUWAHATI: The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi had formed a High-level committee on January 5th, 2019 to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord which included distinguished intellectuals and professionals from different fields of Assam.
Out of Nine members, six of them have refused to be a part of it including M P Bezbaruah, IAS who was appointed to head the committee. The panel was given a mandate of six months to submit its report to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The high-level committee was to be headed by former Union Tourism Secretary M.P. Bezbaruah, with noted Guwahati-based journalist Dhiren Bezbaruah, writers Nagen Saikia and Rongbong Terang, educationist Mukunda Rajbongshi, retired bureaucrat Subash Das, the advocate general of Assam Ramesh Borpatra Gohain and a representative of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) as members. Satyendra Garg, the joint secretary (North East) at the MHA, will represent the Central government.

On 10th January 2019, Dr. Nagen Saikia, former Sahitya Sabha President was the first one to take the decision of not being a part of the committee. He expressed his concern of uncertainty of the Government to implement the committee’s recommendations.
Following him, eminent literary figure Rongbong Terang and Educationalist Dr. Mukunda Rajbangshi stated their decision to walk out of the committee. Their decision was succeeded by journalist Dhiren Bezbaruah’s decision to leave the high-powered committee.
The AASU too had opted out of the committee, protesting and demanding the central Government to abolish the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
Questions about the committee heading to crash rose when M P Bezbaruah, himself also refused to be a part of the committee. Bezbaruah expressed his disappointment over the Union Home Ministry and said that the members were not notified prior to the formation of the committee.
