Citizenship Bill likely to Lapse Rajya Sabha Nod if not passed Today

GUWAHATI: The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which was scheduled to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on February 12 is likely to be tabled on February 13.

It is to be mentioned that as the government makes a final effort to push the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and the Triple Talaq Bill, this crucial session in the Rajya Sabha will seal their fate on February 13.

Both the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 and The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018 were introduced and then passed in Lok Sabha and later sent to Rajya Sabha.

The bills particularly the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill which has been facing strong refusal from the Opposition and local parties and organisations and some of BJP's own allies, may lapse if the Upper House does not pass them on the last day of the Budget session.

With the general elections around the corner, the bills will have to clear Lok Sabha again once a new Lower House is elected.
