Bogibeel Bridge can withstand earthquake of more than 7.0 Magnitude

GUWAHATI: Bogibeel Bridge, the longest rail and road bridge in India which is constructed over the Brahmaputra river can now withstand earthquakes of up to magnitude 7.0 and more on the Richter scale. This bridge is India’s first fully-welded bridge.

The bridge will be inaugurated by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on December 25 of this year. The construction of this bridge is said to enhance India’s capability to ensure faster movement of troops and supplies to Arunachal Pradesh, in the country’s eastern border.

Projector Director, RVR Kishore of the Hindustan Construction Company Ltd., explained that this bridge is located in Seismic Zone-V and this zone is the most vulnerable to earthquakes of magnitudes 7.0 and higher. Seismic restrainers have been added to this bridge to support heavy spans and offer good stability. Items weighing 1700 mega tons can be transported on the bridge such as major battle tanks of the Indian Army. The bridge has been made by using fully welded guarder technology and high-quality copper bearing steel to increase the durability of the bridge.
