Addressing the media on Monday, GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania said, "Under Mission Flood Free, the GMC aims to clean 306 drains and five major rivers, including the Bharalu River, to improve the city’s drainage system.

Additionally, the mayor revealed that a tender for cleaning 120 drains will be floated soon to further strengthen the city’s drainage network.

The Bharalu river, a crucial drainage channel for Guwahati, continues to suffer from the burden of unchecked waste disposal. Plastics and other pollutants frequently clog the river, severely affecting its flow and overall health. Environmental activists have long urged stricter waste management practices and greater public involvement to preserve the waterway.
