Growing Concerns Over Using Phone In Guwahati While Riding Two-Wheelers

GUWAHATI: The growing trend of two-wheeler riders using mobile phones while on the move has ignited serious safety concerns across the city.

Such risky behaviour not only endangers the lives of the riders but also poses a huge threat to the safety of pedestrians and other motorists alike.

People in Guwahati have reported a recent rise in accidents caused by distracted riding, with phone usage while riding being one of the primary contributors. Many riders are often seen talking, and texting, while navigating the busy city roads, often ignoring traffic rules and endangering public safety.

Accidents occur on a daily basis as people become distracted while using their phones. Such behaviour may also result in traffic jams and issues.

Local residents and commuters have expressed their frustration over the lack of adherence to traffic norms.

"It’s becoming a common sight, and it’s scary. Riders using phones are not just risking their own lives but are also a hazard to others," said Ranjan Deka, a resident of Ulubari while talking to GPlus.

“I was hit by an oncoming scooter as the individual on it was on her phone, and hit me, causing injuries,"  said Anjali Kalita, a resident of Lachit Nagar, while talking to GPlus.

Many also wear their helmets improperly or just halfway over their head just to talk on their phones.

People have also alleged that many bike-taxi riders and delivery personnel also keep talking on the phone while riding.

"Many keep talking on the phone during the ride, putting us at risk of accidents as they do not pay attentions to the vehicles on the road," said Manny Rajbongshi, a local of Jalukbari, while talking to GPlus.

Speaking to GPlus, a traffic police official from Basistha stated, "We are taking this matter seriously. Using a phone while riding is a violation of traffic rules and a major safety hazard. Generally we fine ₹2000 if the only violation is talking on the phone while driving or riding, and other vehicle documents are alright. But, fines may increase if there are other violations."

“It is a matter of self-awareness too and we are beginning to take this matter seriously now,” he further added.

Many have also called for the use of hands-free devices or stopping at a safe spot before using phones. However, the responsibility lies equally with riders to prioritize safety over convenience.
