GUWAHATI: A man, identified as Apun, has duped many Bangladeshi residents on the pretext of offering quality medical treatment, alleged one of his victims Rowshanara Sumi, a resident of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

According to Sumi, Apun has dual citizenship and claims to have high connections in the US, Canada, Malaysia and other places abroad. He also claims to know the Bangladesh Prime Minister.

The fraud came to light after Sumi lodged a case against Apun for duping her of Bangladeshi currency and ornaments worth above Rs 4.5 lakhs.

It should be mentioned that Sumi has been suffering from Tumour and Urine Infection and taking advantage of her health condition, Apun got in touch with her through Facebook and promised to get her treated in India.

Sumi fell into the trap and flew into Guwahati on June 19, with proper documents.

Upon arrival, she was picked up by Apun from the Guwahati airport and taken to Darjeeling via a taxi. According to Sumi, she was allegedly sexually harassed.

Later, she was brought back to Guwahati on the claim that Darjeeling didn't have proper treatment and they needed to go to Kolkata.

From Guwahati, they boarded a train to Kolkata. However, Apun got down from the train at Barpeta station along with all of Sumi's money and jewellery, when the victim was asleep.

Sumi realised that she had been duped and got down at Bongaigaon station.

From there, railway police took her to Barpeta and a case was registered at Government Railway Police, Barpeta.

Currently, the victim has been brought to Guwahati from where she's scheduled to fly back to Bangladesh on June 29.

Dispur police are currently investigating the matter and are planning to transfer the case to CID.

"According to Sumi's statement, many Bangladeshi citizens come to India to seek quality treatment but they mostly go to Bangalore. With Guwahati being the gateway, we should focus on making Guwahati a Medical Hub so that such cases can be avoided," a source at the Dispur Police told G Plus.
