GUWAHATI: What has been termed as a "lateral fire" at the Baghjan 5 oil field today led to minor injuries to the three foreign experts who were engaged in capping of the mouth of the well. There was no massive explosion at the site and no casualties have been reported yet as per the PRO of Oil India Ltd (OIL), Tridiv Hazarika.

"While normal operations were going on three experts who were working there at the time sustained minor injuries. They received medical attention at the site by the doctors there and were later sent to a hospital for treatment of their burn injuries. Doctors have found them to be fit and fine and their wounds have been dressed," said Tridiv Hazarika, talking to G Plus, clearing the misconception around the incident being another "blast."

"The incident happened when they were removing a spool from the well head; a spool is basically one of the components of the well, while removing which, there was a lateral fire. The fire is usually protected with a blanket of water and usually burns vertically, that is upward. While they were working, the fire took a lateral turn despite all efforts," said the PRO of Oil India Limited. "They were trained people and they could manage to evade the fire but still while trying to move out, they sustained some minor injuries," he added.
