GUWAHATI: State Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Borah has officially received the certificate of recognition for the Charaideo Maidams as a UNESCO World Heritage site during a ceremony held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The prestigious recognition was conferred upon the site in July 2024. Borah received the certificate from Ernesto Ottone Ramirej, UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Culture.

Borah expressed his immense privilege in receiving the citation at UNESCO's Paris office on X, saying, “Indeed, an immensely priceless gift on the eve of Magh Bihu – The Charaideo Moidams are now officially Bharat’s 43rd World Heritage Site.” He further stated, “It was an immense privilege to ceremonially receive the citation today from Asst. Director General for Culture, @UNESCO, Mr. @ErnestoOttoneR, at the Paris office of the @UN agency, which is dedicated to promoting education, culture, science, and heritage to foster peace and sustainable development worldwide.”
The Charaideo Maidams, a mound-burial system of the Ahom Dynasty, consists of 90 burial mounds situated at Charaideo district. The site, spanning 95.02 hectares, is regarded as one of the highest concentrations of well-preserved Maidams where the royal members of the Tai-Ahom dynasty were interred. In addition to the primary site, a 754.511-hectare buffer zone has been designated to protect the area and its cultural significance.
