Assamese to be Made Compulsory for Govt Jobs: Himanta

GUWAHATI: State’s reappointed education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced in a press meet recently that candidates applying for government jobs should have studied Assamese as a subject till class X.

Addressing a press conference on January 25, he said “For getting state government jobs, a candidate should have Assamese as a subject up to class X. Even if an Assamese candidate schooled in English medium, doesn’t have Assamese up to Class X, he/she will be ineligible for state government jobs. We are going to implement this criterion in case of admission into medical and engineering colleges in the state as well.”

He further said that in the BTAD and Barak Valley districts, similar language compulsion rule will be brought with Bengali and Bodo languages respectively.

Earlier he had said that Assamese would be made a compulsory subject up to Class-X in the state, barring the BTAD and Barak Valley districts.

Meanwhile, Sarma also highlighted that as a result of the decisions, his own children would not be eligible for any Assam Government jobs as they study outside the state and have not studied the language in school.
