GUWAHATI: Some great news awaits visitors of the Assam State Zoo Cum Botanical Garden in Guwahati as they welcomed five new inmates.
After 30 years, the largest zoo in the northeast got two zebras, along with two mandarin ducks, and a female giraffe.
The female giraffe aged 5 years has been brought from Patna, Bihar and it will be an addition to the male giraffe in the zoo.
The two zebras, one male and one female, have been brought from Mysore, Karnataka and they are 1 and 3 years old respectively.
Talking to the newsmen after the programme, Assam forest minister Patowary hailed the occasion as special while informing that new zebras have come to Assam State Zoo after nearly 30 years and he hoped that the zoo authorities would be able to take good care of the animals and increase their population.
He named the zebras Joy and Joya.
Similarly, he said the newly brought female giraffe would be a good company to the lone male giraffe in the zoo and expressed optimism that giraffe population would also grow in the zoo.
He named the giraffes as Bijay and Bijaya.
He also informed that lots of steps have been taken to develop the infrastructure of the zoo and DPR is being prepared for reconstruction of the facility.
"Tourist footfall has also been increasing in the recent years and steps are being planned for development of amenities for visitors to the zoo apart from improving facilities for the animals," he said.
