Assam: Woman with Bihar roots declared 'foreigner', sent to detention camp

GUWAHATI: A Hindi speaking woman in Assam, who traces her roots in Bihar, was declared a ‘foreigner’ by the Foreigners’ Tribunal and sent to a detention camp in Tezpur.

According to reports, the woman, Amila Shah (45), was arrested on June 15.

Amila, a homemaker, is the wife of Ram Dulal Shah, a trader based at Dhalaibeel near Jamugurihat in north-central Assam’s Sonitpur district.

Further, the family members of Amila said that their predecessors had come from Bihar during British era and settled down near Pertubghur Tea Estate situated east of Jamugurihat.

It should be mentioned that except Amila, the names of all her family members, including three brothers and five sisters, appeared on the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC).

“On June 4 last year, the Foreigners’ Tribunal served a notice to her asking her to depose before it for a hearing. After she appeared before it, she was granted bail. However, on June 15 this year, she was arrested by the police when she had visited the office of the Tribunal in connection with her case,” said Amila’s brother, Ramesh Gupta.
