GUWAHATI: There are a number of villages in Assam that suffer from their crops being raided by elephants. Thus, as a means to come up with a solution, 12 villages in Nagaon district of the state have now kept aside land to create a meal zone for the pachyderms.
It should be noted that even though numerous farmers from the Ronghang-Hatikhuli area in Nagaon do not have enough land to even feed their families, they have still donated 203 bighas of community land and take turns to plant paddy exclusively for the jumbos who come down from the hills of the adjacent Karbi Anglong district.
The locals have also planted 2000 outenga (elephant apple), 1500 jackfruit, 25,000 banana plants and an eight-hectare plantation of Napier grass for the pachyderms.
