Assam to have Uniform Driving License and Registration Certificate as Rest of India from Oct 1

GUWAHATI: From October 1, driving licenses and registration certificates issued by transport departments across the country will have the same look, colour and security features.

With this new change, hiding past violations will be almost impossible as the new documents will a QR code that can be read by hand-held devices to access past records of the driver or the vehicle from the central online database.

The Road Transport and Highways Ministry had issued a notification that made it mandatory for all states to follow the uniform norm. The states do have the option to install extra features such as a ‘chip’ and near-field communication (NFC) in these cards. The Centre has demanded that these chips should have the capacity to retain information of the driver and vehicle for 10 years.

The new DLs will also have details of a driver’s declaration to donate organs and mention if they are driving a specially designed vehicle meant for the physically challenged.

This process was first started in October 14 of last year.
