Assam: Tezpur University Develops App For Writing Bodo

GUWAHATI: In a recent technological advancement, a group of students and faculty members from Tezpur University has unveiled an Android application named "Demsi," which translates to graceful and smooth in the Bodo language.

This innovative app, now available on the Google Play Store, is poised to ease Bodo text typing on Android devices by providing intuitive word suggestions as users type the initial letters of a word. It seamlessly integrates with popular applications like WhatsApp, Instagram, email, and more.

The development of the "Demsi" app originated with the vision of Sudem Daimari, an MTech (IT) student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at Tezpur University. Under the guidance of Prof S K Sinha from the CSE Department, the project gained momentum

Nayan Basumatary, an alumnus of the CSE Department and Chairman of the Sub-Divisional Board of Tribal Development, Tezpur, along with Prof Sharma from the CSE Department, played pivotal roles in further refining and expanding the app's capabilities. They received valuable support from Sujal Kumar, a BTech (ECE) student, and Manash Pratim Lahkar, a PhD student in the CSE Department.

More than three million people in the Northeast speak Bodo as their native tongue, and it holds a crucial role in conversations, document creation, and communication. The absence of Bodo word recommendations and suggestions has compelled people to resort to Hindi language software, consuming excessive time for word construction.

Additionally, the use of the Roman (English) alphabet has led to a decline in the usage of the Bodo script. The "Demsi" app addresses these challenges by introducing a spelling checker and word suggestion system tailored to the Bodo language.
