Assam: Speed Limit Set For NH-37 To Safeguard Kaziranga Wildlife

GUWAHATI: A speed limit has been set for vehicles travelling on National Highway 37 (New NH-715) as the wild animals from Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve travel to migrate towards this side of the Karbi Anglong Hills due to the flood situation.

Due to unprecedented rainfall, the flood level in the Brahmaputra River has risen above the danger level, and the animals from Kaziranga cross and travel to safer places. This migration poses a risk to both the animals and passengers traveling on this highway, as the animals may fall prey to miscreants or face injury and death due to vehicular hits.

To address this situation, Liza Talukdar, ACS, Addl District Magistrate, I/c Kaliabor Sub-Division, has issued prohibitory orders under section 163 (1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (GNSS), 2023, stating that the speed of all types of vehicles must not exceed 20 to 40 km per hour, as prescribed on the stretch of National Highway 715 (Old NH-37).

Exemptions to this order include Police, Para Military Forces, Armed Forces, Forest Officials/Guards, Security Personnel to VIPs on duty, ambulances carrying critically ill patients, and medical staff on emergency duties.
