Assam: Sniffer dogs to check narcotics smuggling

GUWAHATI: Assam police will very soon deploy sniffer narcotics dogs which are specially trained just to check drug smuggling in the state.

A source in the criminal investigation department (CID) said, “Five sniffer dogs have been specially trained to check narcotics smuggling and after two more weeks they will be deployed at strategic locations in the state.”

He revealed that last year, 15 sniffer dogs were procured by Assam police from Hyderabad.
All the 15 dogs were sent to the Border Security Force (BSF) training centre in Madhya Pradesh for specific training. 

Out of the 15 dogs, 5 are sniffer explosive dogs, 5 are tracking dogs and 5 are sniffer narcotics dogs. 

These 15 dogs along with 25 dog handlers were sent to Madhya Pradesh last year. 

The source said, “10 dogs have reached Guwahati last week after completing their trainings.”

5 more dogs which are still under training are tracking dogs. The tracking dogs are of Doberman breed. 10 dogs which reached Guwahati (sniffer narcotics and sniffer explosives) are Labradors and German Shepherds.

These 10 dogs will be under observation for 2 weeks and after the observation is found positive, they will be deployed at strategic locations.
