GUWAHATI: The Assam government has officially sent a proposal to the Reserve Bank of India and other concerned banks to produce commemorative coins bearing the image of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made the announcement during a press conference held in Guwahati on Thursday. “We have submitted a proposal to the RBI and other banking institutions to mint coins with Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s image."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on September 8 to kick off the year-long birth centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika. He will also lay the foundation stones for a couple of projects. Modi will also inaugurate the Assam Bio-Ethanol Plant. The facility, which has a production capacity of 49 KTPA of ethanol, will use 300 KTPA of bamboo as its primary feedstock. Besides, the prime minister will lay the foundation stones for two major infrastructure projects. These are the ₹5,700 crore Guwahati Ring Road, aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity around the city, and the Darrang Medical College and Hospital, which is expected to enhance medical education and healthcare services in the region.
