GUWAHATI: Assam Police on Thursday, April 24, arrested AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam after he made controversial remarks suggesting the central government’s involvement in the recent Pahalgam terror attack and the 2019 Pulwama attack.

Islam, who represents the Dhing constituency, made the statements while campaigning for party candidates ahead of the upcoming Panchayat elections. In his speech, he directly accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of being “behind” both attacks and claimed that the BJP had politically benefited from the Pulwama incident in the 2019 general elections.
“I believe that the central government had a role in the Pulwama attack in which over 40 BSF brave hearts were killed. The BJP gained politically from it. Now, I believe the Pahalgam attack too has similar motives. If the government fails to bring out the truth, we will be bound to believe that both Narendra Modi and Amit Shah were behind the two attacks,” Islam said during the campaign.
He further alleged that the recent attack in Pahalgam was carried out indiscriminately by terrorists targeting tourists under the cover of darkness.
Following public outrage and condemnation across political lines, Assam Police arrested Islam from his residence in Nagaon’s Dhing and transferred him to Guwahati for further interrogation. He has been booked under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Sections 152, 196, 197(i), 113(i), 352, and 353.
Relatedly, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal has distanced the party from Islam's comments, stating that the remark is a personal view of the latter, and it does not reflect the party's stance. "I have heard his comments, and it is unfortunate he said that," Ajmal said.
