Assam: Principal Of Dhemaji Commerce College Suspended For Intoxication On Campus

GUWAHATI: The Principal-in-charge of Dhemaji Commerce College, Biren Chandra Konwar, who was discovered in an intoxicated state within the college campus, has been officially suspended from his position as of Tuesday.

The suspension directive was issued by the Directorate of Higher Education, Assam, as confirmed by the Higher Education Department.

According to the order, Konwar is now confined to his designated headquarters in Dhemaji and is prohibited from leaving the premises without prior approval from the competent authority.

The incident that led to Konwar's suspension transpired in August of this year when he was allegedly found under the influence of alcohol during regular class hours. This incident gained widespread attention after a video circulated online, depicting the principal along with four others consuming alcoholic beverages within the college premises. In response to this incident, students of the college organised a protest.

In addition to the suspension, a show cause notice has reportedly been served to Principal Biren Chandra Konwar concerning his actions. However, it's worth noting that during his suspension period, Konwar will receive a subsistence allowance in accordance with the applicable regulations.
