GUWAHATI: The State Government on August 25 announced a pivotal decision in a recent cabinet meeting pertaining to the amendment of Rule 3 of Schedule-1 of the Assam Elementary Education (Provincialisation) Rules 1977, aiming to refine the criteria for the selection of teachers in Lower Primary (LP) and Upper Primary (UP) schools across the state.

The amendment focuses on redefining the selection process for teachers at both the Lower Primary and Upper Primary levels, emphasising an equitable and comprehensive evaluation of candidates.

The objective is to elevate the standards of education by placing well-qualified and dedicated educators in Assam's primary schools.

For Lower Primary Schools (Class I to Class V):
Under the amended selection criteria, candidates for teaching positions in lower primary schools will be assessed based on the following proportions:
-5% of the percentage of marks obtained in the Higher Secondary/Senior Secondary or equivalent examination.
-10% of the percentage of marks secured in graduation. For candidates with a major in a specific subject, marks obtained in that subject will be considered.
-5% of marks secured in either the Diploma in Elementary Education (D.EI.Ed), Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), or Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) Examination.
-80% of the percentage of marks obtained in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), including the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) for lower primary schools.
The number of selected candidates will be proportional to the available vacancies.

For Upper Primary Schools (Class VI to Class VIII):
Similarly, for teachers in upper primary schools, the revised selection criteria are as follows:
-5% of the percentage of marks obtained in the Higher Secondary/Senior Secondary or equivalent examination.
-10% of the percentage of marks secured in graduation. Marks secured in the subject of specialization will be taken into account.
-5% of marks secured in either the Diploma in Elementary Education (D.EI.Ed), Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), or Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) Examination.
-80% of the percentage of marks obtained in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), including the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) for upper primary schools.
Similar to the LP selection process, the number of selected candidates will correspond to the number of vacant positions.
