GUWAHATI: Assam Police apprehended two men from Arunachal Pradesh on August 24, in Nepali Basti, Jonai for smuggling elephant tusks.
The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Jonai Police Station. The smugglers were identified as Tage Rina and Talen Jum.
According to reports, a team led by the Wild Life Crime Control Bureau along with the Forest Department and the Jonai Police Station initiated an operation, and seized seven elephant tusks, one gun, a car, seven cartridges, documents and three mobile phones from the accused.
The operation was conducted based on the information received by the authorities. The police have also suspected the involvement of locals in the smuggling racket.
Speaking to the media, SDPO, Jonai, Bhargav Moni Das said, "The operation started yesterday. Today at around 8 AM we intercepted the two accused on the road. One of the accused is Tage Rina, who is an ex-army official."
