GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently while addressing the media announced that all police outposts in the state will be upgraded to full-fledged "thanas" or Police Stations.

CM Sarma stated that approximately 250 police outposts will be transformed into Police Stations. This upgrade will increase the total number of police stations in Assam to over 600.

Additionally, CM Sarma said that all patrol posts will also be elevated to "thanas" from now on. However, he clarified that in certain cases where an outpost or patrol post may not require upgradation, these will be "rationalised" accordingly.

The in-principle decision is expected to receive approval from the state cabinet within the next six months. CM Sarma also announced the digitisation of General Diary entries under the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS).

During surveys, it was discovered that while 50% of total cases were registered in Guwahati, the city had only 10% of the police force. To address this imbalance, CM Sarma committed to increasing the workforce to ensure the prompt disposal of cases.

CM Sarma also revealed plans to expand the infrastructure of Guwahati Police and increase the number of police stations from the current 19 to 34.
