GUWAHATI: In a unique initiative, a group of women in Jorhat, Assam, have set up an open library under trees to attract a new generation of children to read books. The library was inaugurated on Monday, September 5.
The open library under the trees of Jorhat’s Mariani Girls High School offers free books that are distributed in boxes marked with different genres which later can be taken by one and all.
“In today's fast-paced, digital age, gadgets have become the preferred mode of entertainment and books have taken the back seat. However, books allow us to imagine and learn like no other medium. We from educational backgrounds really appreciate this unique initiative and indeed I will donate a few books of mine to this open library.” said Nilim Patowary, a lecturer and resident of Jorhat while talking to G Plus.
Dipila Poddar, who is a part of the group, told the media that their main aim was to reduce the gap between the students and the library.
"Nowadays students prefer to use the Internet, Google to find out any solution. And the students have also gone far away from the environment. So we are trying to connect our children with the environment by setting up this open library under trees or a garden library," Poddar added.
The school Authority and local residents of Jorhat have appreciated the unique initiative taken by the women's group.
