Assam: Muslim Woman Applauded for Performing Last Rites of Hindu Sworn Brother

GUWAHATI: A Muslim woman from Sivasagar, Assam Muskan Begum, performed the last rites of a Hindu man, who was her sworn brother.

While a section of people applauded Begum for her actions, she had to face criticism from certain sections of the people too.

However, she responded to them by stating her religion is "humanity."

On a social media post, Begum stated, "People will misunderstand me and will taunt me and so far I have heard a lot but I fear no one. I don’t believe any religion but only humanity."

The incident is a living testimony to the values of Bhakti reformer Sankardev and Muslim Preacher Azan Fakir, whose values have shaped the secular fabric of Assam. It is also a mark of a sister's love for her brother.

"I promised to be your sister forever, you left me but I am still standing beside you not caring who says what. By doing the funeral rites I have done my duties as a sister, you will always be alive in my heart," Begum wrote on social media site Facebook.
