GUWAHATI: Kaziranga National park (KNP) in Assam is witnessing lesser inflow of migratory birds this season. The forest officials claim that it is due to degrading climatic conditions in recent times.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site is a major hub for migratory birds and is known as an Important Bird Area (IBA). KNP is also considered as an important area for the diversity of birds in Assam.
"Usually the migratory birds come here by October, but since the past few years, they have been arriving in November. Also, the birds usually stay here until March, but since the past 3 years, they migrate back by February,” a forest official said.
Kaziranga is home to almost 497 bird species, of which 55 are winter migratory birds. These include birds like northern pintail, greylag goose, malad ducks, etc. KNP also has 25 globally important birds, and 23 birds that are endangered or in the vulnerable list, informed a forest official of the Kaziranga National park.
