GUWAHATI: The ongoing spell of floods in Assam has triggered a series of challenges for residents spanning various districts across the state. In response to the pressing need to counteract soil erosion along the Brahmaputra River's banks, the Tinsukia district administration has adopted a rapid and crucial measure.
The Felai-Naukata area in the Nabarmura Goan Panchayat, situated under the Saikhowa Block of the Doomdooma Revenue Circle, has suffered significant soil erosion attributed to the might of the Brahmaputra. The urgency of the situation has imperilled the embankments that serve as a vital defence against the surging waters of the river.
In a bid to shield the embankments from exacerbating erosion, authorities have taken a temporary yet crucial step by deploying geo bags filled with sand strategically along the riverbanks, aimed at curbing further degradation of the embankments. This innovative approach has been employed to fortify a 40-metre stretch of the embankment.
Bolin Chetia, the local MLA, undertook a visit to the affected area, assessing the situation firsthand. In response to the immediate crisis, he emphasised the need for a comprehensive solution.
Highlighting the gravity of the situaAssam: Boat Capsizes With Over 30 Passengers Onboard In Dibang Rivertion, Chetia mentioned that the altering course of the Dibang River has played a role in exacerbating the issue of soil erosion. He underscored the significance of proactive measures, noting that the scenario could have been far more dire if the river's full force had been directed toward the altered course.
