The Union Ministry of Human Resources first gave the public access to the NDLI in April 2020 when the country was under a lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 4 crore 60 lakh books and periodicals are presently available in the library.

The digital version of the books and magazines can be read using any digital device including smartphones, computers or tablets. The NDLI website has categorised the study materials or books according to the requirement of students be it schools, UG engineering, UG science, management, law, career studies, research material, etc.

People can also search directly by name of books and topics.
