Assam: Delhi to Guwahati Train Halted by Protesters in Rangia

GUWAHATI: A train bound to Guwahati from New Delhi was halted by a procession in Rangia on Wednesday, February 17. The protesters leading the procession claimed to be COVID-19 workers who worked during the pandemic.

The protesters demanded appointment of COVID-19 workers in government jobs. As a result of which, they blocked the incoming train.

Slogans against the Health Department and the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government were raised. "Give us employment or jail us," were raised by the protesters.

"They (government) told us they will give us jobs and many assurances. We will sit here until we are given jobs," said a protester. The protesters claimed that they had to face societal ostracisation amid the COVID-19 to perform their duty, yet they are devoid of the benefits.

Following the blockade, the people bound to Guwahati from Delhi were stuck in the line for many hours.

The Rangia police intervened and tried to diffuse the situation.
